Samples

During last week and this week i have been working towards small samples to gather ideas of what techniques i will be using for my fabrics to use on chairs. The collection i will be using to upholster the chairs with will be based on the vintage / pop art images i have collected throught out my sketchbook and design work. Below are a few images of screen printed samples i have created.
This design i have just used screen printing techniques mixing geometric shapes with my furniture shapes inspired by the 1960's.

This print is created by screen printing plus flocking on top. With this design there was a mistake made when using the flock as i didnt iron the screen print before adding the flock resulting in the screen print looking like its been bleached.

A smaller print used by the same techniques as the one above ( screen printing and flocking). This one worked as i ironed the print before adding the flock for texture.

Market Research for Ikea.

Yesterday i visited Ikea to see what type of style for ceramics and furnishings is out in the market for this season. I found alot of flower prints were on the furnishings and also came across an interior based on geometric shapes. The ceramics i found in Ikea all had different design layouts and has inspired me to create my ceramics with a simular design layout. Overall my products wouldnt fit in with the market of Ikea as Ikea keeps to plain and simple designs with the few odd pieces that stand out. Below are a few images of pieces that inspired me or was simular to my work i want to produce for the exhibition.

Simular block patterns that i am currently using in my work.

Inspired by the design layout , spreading diagonally across the plate.

This is a design for a bowl. Inspired by how it is laid out just in the centre going straight down.

Ceramic set collection .

Patterned material to upholster chairs with. The flower pattern used in this design is quite simular to my flower patterns that are created in illustrator.

Simualr design as i am working with at the moment with my vintage pop art furniture.

Sample Ideas

During last week and the beginning of this week i have been designing small sample ideas inspired by 1960's furniture and wooden textures. As well as creating digital prints for my samples, I've also got ideas to use the images of furniture on a screen to create screen printed materials to use for upholstering chairs. Below are images of how the wooden texture ideas have became small  A3 samples to be digitally printed.
Using my colour palette and the wood images, I placed the images in to  the shapes from my design sheets using Adobe Illustrator.

Wood texture in shapes.

Following on from last week , for my vintage/pop art collection, i have been focusing on creating some digital designs that have images of 1950's - 1970's furniture repeated to create a pattern that would be suitable for upholstering chairs with. For my flower power collection i have printed some A4 designs on to acetate and added paper flowers on top to see the effect of using different backgrounds instead of using plain pieces of paper.

Wood Textures.

After this weeks tutorial I began to look at textures of wood to use in my digital designs for furnishings and fabric and take pictures for visual research. The reason why I am doing this is because in the 1960's a lot of wood was used for the interiors of the 1960's and for my exhibition the layout is based on a dining room area from that era.  With the images I have collected I am going to experiment by firstly creating some prints from the images by using lino printing and mono printing, the images I have made by using these techniques will then be used to create an effect on the background of the fabric or wallpaper for samples. After experimenting with printing, using the images from my visual research of wood, I am going to transfer them in Photoshop to place into the shapes of furniture that I have been drawing the previous four weeks. Hopefully by creating these samples it will give me an idea of what type of design to use for the wallpaper and the furnishing.

This week and last week work sheets.

The last two weeks i have been focusing on drawing silhouette shapes from 1950's - 1970's furniture for my vintage/ pop art collection. The aim of drawing these silhouettes is to then create a digital design with outlined furniture shapes and silhouette shapes creating wallpapers for final exhibiton.
This week after tutorial with Donna i started to create strips of cut out floral shapes to create a 2d effect making the strips look like mini versions of wallpaper for ideas for the final flower power wallpapers. Below are some examples of the sheets and strips i have been creating the last two weeks.
